To comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we need to ensure the information we give you is concise, transparent, written in an easy to understand language! So we have struggled reading all the big words and hopefully made it clear, as requested, so even a child can understand. Here goes – key points.
The GDPR applies to organisations located within the EU and organisations located outside of the EU offering goods or services, or monitoring behaviour of, EU data subjects. Applied to ‘personal data’ – any identifiable information relating to a person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by name, identification number, location data or identified online. Forcing fresh technology and changes in the way organisations collect information about people.
Consent must be clear and noticeable from other matters it must be as easy to withdraw consent as it is to give it. Clear ‘opt-in’ consent is required for processing sensitive personal data -whereas non-sensitive data collection requires clear ‘opt-out’ consent.
We value our readers’ privacy and note we do not actually collect personal data for ourselves. But we do have cookies on our website that allow third-parties to collect data/tracking they require to recognise we forwarded you via a link to their website. We need to allow this as publishers/affiliates for other companies promoting and showcasing their products and sometimes services, in return for a commission should you make a purchase. Before we agree to add a product/service link to our website we check that it is something and somewhere we are happy to link to, but we cannot be held responsible for third-party policies, just as they cannot be held responsible for our policies.
We also have cookies that collect data/tracking needed to help improve our website including Google and Pinterest Analytics. Information such as; pages visited, length of time on a web page, device type so we know how mobile and desktop engagement differ and if we should make any improvements. Also, which countries website visitors came from. We do not have access to any personal information such as names, addresses, date of birth or payment details. Third-party websites will need more personal information if they are to process a payment or set up an account for you with them. Therefore, before shopping online you should ensure the website can be trusted. Reading through privacy policies and cookie disclosures can be very long-winded which is part of the reason this update has been deemed necessary. Our understanding is the policy will strengthen how personal data is used, whilst making businesses accountable to do all they can to prevent fraud and hacking of your personal data. If you require more detail and useful information check this EU GDPR Information Portal.
If you should email us to get in touch our email is safe and we do not keep for longer than necessary or forward your details. We are not building a contact list. We wish to grow trust with our readers and hope you return to our website time after time without us having to remind you constantly who we are. Although we might pop-up on social media such as Twitter or Instagram, for example, who also have to comply with the same privacy policies. Sorry, concise means keep it to the point.
We do not ask you for your personal details on our website and you do not send us any money that happens on third-party sites.
We also comply with recommended safety guards; including having the HTTPS in our URL making our site more secure. You should look for the green padlock sign plus the word secure before the https and the name of the website. All website owners should at the least be working towards this. We aim to link to safe sites that we trust and we handpick any banner ads that we place on our pages, we do not have pop-up ads or use any data to target you with specific ads, we hope you visit us because of the products we choose to showcase, we don’t wish to link you to somewhere unsafe!
‘Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The ‘S’ at the end of HTTPS stands for ‘Secure‘. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.’ Googled
Don’t panic if you don’t see HTTPS on a website you are visiting but you should expect to see it on pages where you are transferring personal data such as making a payment. Sometimes the HTTPS has a line through usually due to outward links that do not have the same status as the one you are on. Hope that clears it up a little.
